![]() didn’t begin as a direct analysis of the form and genre, but it gradually started to tell a story that used comic book tropes to show how dangerous and destructive superheroes can be and how they perpetuate a dysfunctional world. Adult Swim’s classic and now sadly-concluded animated series The Venture Bros.goes about things a bit differently. A lot of the material that pokes fun at comics, however, does so for the simple joys of parody or to highlight the intrinsic silliness of superheroes. Many films within the current superhero cinema system like Deadpool even turn a self-aware eye to the source material, while shows like The Tick poke fun at the medium with exaggerated character types. “When the gates open, me, Poe, and me rush in.There’s nothing new about comic book and superhero parodies. What was your favorite episode of season two? What did you think of the cliffhanger? Comment below, on Facebook, or Twitter! You can now see my Saturday Morning Cartoon posts at The Two-Headed Nerd! Adult Swim at the time streamed all their episodes for their Sunday night shows two days early. I remember watching the season every Friday on my computer. is easily one of my top 5 shows, and I can’t recommend this season, or the entire show enough. I didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the show, or the character, just odd. I suspect the point was he’s grown soft from being out of the field for too long, but it’s doesn’t feel earned. ![]() This wasn’t a completely drastic change, but very noticeable. It’s never really explained, it just happened. This was brought up by his romantic ally/rival, Molotov Cocktease, in “Assassinanny 911” about how he’s grown soft. He genuinely cared for the boys, calling the Venture’s his family on several occasions, and going a little beyond what needed to be done to protect them. The second season inexplicably had him loosen up, a lot. He viewed them as being his job, and cared little more beyond that, retaining a gruff exterior the entire time and ready to kill at the drop of a hat. Originally, he seemed indifferent to the Venture family, showing little emotion besides kill (that’s an emotion). My only complaint about the season is the odd characterization change of Brock from the first season. Due to time travel, there ends up being two Brocks. ![]() For the rest of the episode have scenes of the family continuing their time traveling adventure against the Osiris Cult, which eventually includes recruiting Sigmund Freud, Caligula, and Edgar Allan Poe. Venture escapes the temple they were held captive in, and flies off to find help. The episode plays as if it was part two of a Johnny Quest episode, even featuring a hilarious “Previously on…” Dr. The best episode of the season, and possibly the show came from “Escape to the House of Mummies Part II.”. At the end Brock takes Venturestein to find prostitutes. Venture used body parts from Monarch henchmen to create Venturestein while a group of kids who look strangely like the Scooby-Doo gang investigate the Venture compound. “¡Viva los Muertos!” was written by Ben Edlund (The Tick creator and Supernatural writer). ![]() The Baron mistakes Dean for a girl, whose dressed like Princess Leia, and marries him. “Love-Bheits” had the family trapped in Ünderland by Baron Ünderbheit, where the group was coming back from a Halloween Party (still in costume). (Warning, it’s a little spoilerish, but when you think about it, it’s not).įrom there, the season only got better. The budget wouldn’t allow for the rights to the song, but Adult Swim saw the merit in it and footed the bill. The premier had played “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)” by Aquagen ft Rozalla over the opening. The first episode quickly answered them (dealing with something suspected in the first season) in one of the best montages I’ve ever seen. Questions were raised at the end of season 1 two years before the second one aired in 2006. Though they were all great, 2 is by far my favorite. The show either knocks it out of the ballpark, possible becoming the best it will ever be, or utterly fails, losing it’s identity before crashing and burning. Still, the sophomore season is always one people approach cautiously. knew exactly they type of show it wanted to be from the outset. They either have an identity right off the bat, or after a little trial and error, find their footing during the first season. Quality shows typically follow one of two paths.
